Blepharoplasty in Chicago and Arlington Heights, IL

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can help to correct excess skin above or below the eye itself. When skin sags above the eye, it can impair vision and become unsightly. Excess or sagging skin below the eye can lead to the appearance of looking permanently tired or “droopy.” Blepharoplasty can remedy one or both eyelid problems. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John A. Kotis offers this innovative procedure to residents of Chicago, Arlington Heights and surrounding Illinois communities.

What is the Blepharoplasty Procedure?

Sagging under eye skin and overall eye appearance can be treated with cosmetic surgery. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, reduces skin and fat in the eyelids. The procedure can create an open eye appearance. Some patients also choose eyelid surgery for function; the loose skin around the lids can obscure vision.  Patients from Arlington Heights, Schaumburg or Elgin, should visit the office for more information on a blepharoplasty procedure.

What are the Types of Blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery can be performed both on the lower and upper lids. A lower and upper blepharoplasty can be performed separately or together. Each procedure offers different, unique results.

  • Upper Blepharoplasty – removes wrinkles or fat around the upper eyelids. During an upper blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. Kotis makes an incision in the upper eyelid crease. He removes fat deposits, tightens surrounding muscle or trims skin for a more open eye appearance.Dr. Kotis may also perform an upper blepharoplasty to restore vision. Overhanging skin from the eyelid can limit peripheral vision but once the skin is removed, patients may experience ease once again with daily activities like driving or reading.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty – A lower eyelid surgery removes the appearance of bags or sagging skin from beneath the eye. The eye can look more awake and alert after lower eyelid surgery. During a lower blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. Kotis makes an incision along the lower lash line. He then removes fat from the puffy under eye bags. Wrinkles can be smoothed for a more desirable, younger look.
  • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty – As another eye option, patients can also choose a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. As opposed to a traditional lower eyelid procedure, the crease is made inside of the lid, closer to the eye. Dr. Kotis performs transconjunctival procedures to correct certain lower lid conditions, remove excess tissue or redistribute tissue. Patients can experience results without any removal or trimming of skin.

What Can I Expect During Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

Dr. Kotis prepares his patients for recovery. Before a blepharoplasty procedure, patients will be given specific care instructions. Swelling and bruising fade as the incisions heal. Patients may schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Kotis at his Chicago office to monitor their healing process.
