Facelift (rhytidectomy)

The Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery

There is more to the modern facelift than just pulling back the facial skin. Today, cosmetic surgeons can offer procedures that tighten the skin and the underlying facial muscles without giving that harsh, pulled back appearance we so frequently associate with the facelift.

Done alone or in conjunction with facial implants, facelifts can recreate a more youthful appearance by making the skin more taut, the muscles of the face more relaxed, and the face in general more youthfully proportioned.

The procedure

In most cases, the incisions for a facelift begin behind the hairline, continue along the front of the ear, and end at the hairline behind the ear. This allows sufficient access to perform the facelift, while obscuring any subsequent scarring following the procedure.

Through these incisions, your cosmetic surgeon is able to trim and suction out excess fat and tighten underlying muscle and tissue. The skin is then pulled taut over the face, and any excess skin contributing to the aged appearance is trimmed before the incisions are sutured, leaving you with a firmer, more youthful looking face.
