Frequently Asked Liposuction Questions

The Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery

Is liposuction an effective weight loss technique?

No. Liposuction is a very effective means to eliminate specific areas of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise, and to enhance a generally fit physique by bringing it into better proportion. It is not, however, effective as an overall weight loss technique.

Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction works by removing excess fat cells in a specific area of the body, thus resculpting the physique and creating more aesthetically desirable proportions. This does not mean, however, that the area is any more resistant to weight gain in the future. The remaining fat cells can still expand and repropagate as a result of overall weight gain. To best maintain the results of your liposuction procedure, it is important to stick to a sensible regimen of diet and exercise.

Is liposuction right for me?

If you are generally physically fit, but have stubborn areas of fat that you can't get rid of through diet and exercise, liposuction can help you bring your body into proportion, and can help you achieve greater satisfaction, confidence, and self-esteem related to your body. If you are generally unhappy with your appearance, have deeper rooted problems with your self-image, if you have unreasonable expectations of cosmetic surgery, or if you lack the commitment necessary to maintain the results, however, it is unlikely that liposuction is an effective solution to your problems.

Will there be scarring?

The incisions made for the liposuction procedure are very small, so in most cases, any subsequent scarring will be minimal, and will probably fade or disappear over time. In some rare cases, however, there may be small but permanent scarring at the site of the procedure.

Will liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Liposuction usually doesn't result in a significant decrease in the appearance of cellulite. The cottage cheese, or orange peel appearance of cellulite is caused by the fibrous connectors underneath the skin, and the appearance of fat underneath this connective tissue. As such, reducing the amount of fat doesn't usually cause an appreciable difference in the appearance of cellulite.
