The face is affected by numerous factors over time. Genetics, sun exposure, and stress can leave their mark on the face through fine lines, sagging skin, and wrinkles. These marks often create an aged look which many men dislike. A male facelift erases these markers of age and stress, rejuvenating the face and creating a more youthful appearance. Dr. Kotis, a board-certified Chicago, Illinois plastic surgeon provides male facelift procedures tailored to the patient in his Arlington Heights and Lakeview offices.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, removes unwanted fat, tightens facial muscles, and redrapes skin across the face and neck to erase facial signs of aging. This procedure is used to target creases between the mouth and nose, jowls, and excess fat deposits.

Facelifts are performed alone or in combination with procedures such as eyelid surgery to achieve the youthful look desired by the patient.

Best Candidates for Male Facelift

Great candidates for a male facelift are men who exhibit the signs of aging across their faces and necks. Most men who undergo a facelift are aged 40 to 60, though men in their 70s and 80s can still undergo successful facelift surgery.

Facelifts can instill increased self-confidence in a patient by restoring their youthful appearance. Good candidates for the surgery possess realistic expectations for the procedure’s outcome.

Planning For A Facelift

A facelift procedure is unique to each patient. In your first consultation, Dr. Kotis will examine your facial and neck features, as well as the skin and bone structure to develop your treatment plan. He will review your medical history to determine if you’re a strong candidate for the procedure. Inform Dr. Kotis of the medications and supplements you are taking; it is very important that he know if you are on medications that affect blood clotting or are a smoker.

If a facelift is determined to be the right procedure for you, Dr. Kotis will run you through the surgery. He’ll inform you what type of anesthesia will be used, where the procedure will occur and give you any information needed to prepare for the surgery.

Preparing For the Facelift Procedure

You’ll be given instructions to follow ahead of your facelift procedure, detailing food and drink restrictions, quitting smoking, and avoiding particular medications and supplements. Following these instructions is critical. Smoking inhibits the flow of blood to the skin, which can restrict healing of incisions – Dr. Kotis requests patients cease smoking for the week or two prior to facelift surgery.

Often, men grow out their hair prior to facelift surgery, so that incisions may be easily covered during the healing period. Results are not immediately visible – patients should expect it will take the time to heal and for the facelift’s results to become apparent.

Bring someone with you on the day of surgery to drive you home. You may be more comfortable arranging someone to stay with you at home to assist you during the first few days following your procedure.

The Facelift Procedure

A facelift requires several hours to complete. If extensive additional procedures are a component of your treatment, your surgeries may be scheduled over two sessions.

Incisions are made above the hairline at the patient’s temples. The incisions follow a natural path in front of the ear, to the back of the earlobe along the lower scalp. If the neck is involved, Dr. Kotis may create a minimal incision beneath the chin.

To perform a facelift, Dr. Kotis divides facial skin from the fat and muscle layers. Fat is trimmed or suctioned away if necessary, contouring the face and neck. Facial muscles and their membranes are tightened before the skin is pulled back and repositioned. Excess skin is trimmed away. Tissue layers are secured via absorbable sutures. Skin incisions are closed. There will be no apparent sutures requiring removal.

Dr. Kotis may choose to insert a drain behind the ear to eliminate blood from pooling. Your head may be wrapped with bandages, which is meant to reduce swelling and bruising. Both the drains and bandages will be taken off 24 hours after the procedure.

How Much Does A Facelift Cost?

Because a facelift is unique to each patient, the cost will vary. Dr. Kotis will inform you of the facelift cost during your initial consultation. For your convenience, we accept check, cash, major credit cards, and offer financing.

Aftercare Following A Facelift

After a facelift, the head must be elevated for a number of days to allow for healing. Activities should be restricted at home, and someone must drive you home from the procedure.

Results of the facelift cannot be immediately seen. The healing process will take weeks, and you will gradually be able to see the rejuvenation provided by the surgery.

Patients should rest for the week following the facelift procedure but should feel ready to be up and minimally active in the day or two after surgery. Be careful with your face and hair, so as not to cause pain. Most patients return to work in 10 to 14 days after undergoing a facelift.

Dr. Kotis will release you with aftercare instructions to follow. Strenuous activity such as exercise and extensive housework should be avoided for a minimum of two weeks. Walking and light stretching are ok during the recovery period, but physical sports should be off the table for four weeks or more.
