Vein Treatment

The Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery

Spider veins are small web-patterned veins that usually appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles. The result of small dilated vessels near the surface of the skin, these veins are harmless, but can be unsightly and embarrassing for those who have them. And although they are not harmful to your health, they can often result in discomfort such as itching, burning, swelling, pain, and night cramps.

Although many people refer to spider veins as being broken, in fact, they are simply small networks of veins that have become dilated, or stretched, due to a variety of factors. While these veins are connected to the circulatory system, they are not essential, and subsequently, they can be safely eliminated.

There are two primary treatments available for spider veins: Laser vein removal and sclerotherapy. Both procedures are non-invasive and can be performed in regular office visit with a licensed cosmetic surgeon.

Laser vein removal

Laser vein removal is a procedure in which a laser light is directed at the spider veins. The laser light bypasses the skin, targeting the hemoglobin of the veins. This causes the vessels to coagulate, break down, and be harmlessly absorbed back into your system. Laser vein removal allows for more precise areas to be targeted, allowing the surgeon to treat smaller areas and finer veins than sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a technique in which spider veins are injected with a sterile saline or other harmless solution, which causes inflammation and eventual collapse of the veins. Following this procedure, the targeted veins are broken down and reabsorbed into the body, as with laser vein therapy. Sclerotherapy requires approximately one injection per square inch of area to be treated.
