Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting® – How do I know what I need?
Dr. Kotis is hearing from more and more patients who are asking him the question, “Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting® – how do I know what I need?” Dr. Kotis often weighs the benefits of CoolSculpting® and liposuction, as each of these body contouring procedures are effective. It’s good to have some insider advice to help figure out which of the two is right for your needs.
With so many options out there, it can be tough to figure out which plastic surgery procedure may be best for you. In order to point you in the right direction, while maximizing your time and budget, let’s start by considering a few things that you will want to take into consideration.
Both liposuction and CoolSculpting® target unwanted fat and aim to remove these areas. Liposuction is an invasive, surgical procedure, whereas CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment with absolutely zero downtime. During your CoolSculpting® procedure, patients can email, talk on the phone, watch TV, and even eat and drink. And best of all, immediately following the procedure they can resume their daily activities.
If you have a small fatty “roll” that you wish to address, such as on your tummy, hip, upper back or inner thigh, and these areas are “pinchable” without very loose or hanging skin, CoolSculpting® may be a perfect option for you. It is also great solution if you have a smaller budget with no ability for time off for recovery. Treatment of one area with CoolSculpting® takes as little as one hour in the office with no downtime.
Now, let’s say that the area you wish to treat is a little larger or that you would rather do it all at once and your schedule will allow you to take off roughly five to seven days for downtime. If this is the case, liposuction may well be a better option, provided your skin is still pretty tight and you don’t have too much laxity, in which case depending upon the size and number of areas to be treated, your liposuction procedure will require only one surgery or treatment and your results are immediate but most visible after the initial swelling subsides which is in roughly four to six weeks.
So if you are trying to decide between CoolSculpting® and liposuction, the big practical question is, are you looking for a single, intensive treatment with immediate results and have the ability to take off from work for recovery afterwards, or would you rather have several smaller, less costly, non-invasive treatments that require no downtime with results in three to four months.
Not everyone is a candidate for every procedure, and each of these procedures treats different issues. However, none of these treatments are weight-loss procedures. In fact, Dr. Kotis recommends that most patients come to see him after they have lost the weight, to help contour small, stubborn areas or to remove leftover skin. It is also important to note that if you have loose or excess skin of the abdomen, unfortunately, it is not likely that Coolsculpting® or liposuction will give you great results. If this is the case, you may actually need a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty.
