What to expect during your facelift with Dr. Kotis
When helping his patients rejuvenate their facial appearance, Dr. Kotis typically performs multiple procedures at once to ensure a seamless transformation. In addition to the traditional facelift, he often performs a neck lift and/or places facial implants to achieve the results his patients desire.
Traditional Facelift
The traditional facelift is done to smooth creases, tighten skin and minimize wrinkles around the eyes, nose and mouth. To perform this procedure, Dr. Kotis will make a small incision near the hairline. Through that opening, he will tighten your underlying facial muscles before pulling your skin taut and trimming away any excess tissue. Doing so provides a natural-looking result by smoothing the skin over your newly tightened facial muscles.
Neck Lift
If you also want to address aging skin and unwanted fat beneath the chin, Dr. Kotis will likely perform a neck lift as well to improve definition in this area to aid the facelift.
To perform this procedure, he will make two small incisions near the ear and below the chin. He will remove unwanted tissue through those openings to create a more defined jawline, neck, and chin. This procedure, in conjunction with a facelift, gives the opportunity for a more uniform, youthful appearance.
Implants
With age, the face has a tendency to lose volume in key areas that are associated with youth – such as the cheeks and chin. When this occurs, Dr. Kotis may place custom silicone implants to restore this lost volume.
This has the benefit of not only emphasizing your features, but also of enhancing the results of your facelift or neck lift. Dr. Kotis will discuss candidacy for implants within your initial consultation.
Facelift Recovery
Because post-surgical swelling, puffiness, and bruising can be persistent, it takes time for the full results of your facelift to become apparent. Immediately after the procedure, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, necessitating rest and limited physical activity. Basic restrictions typically include avoiding strenuous exercise, bending over, or lifting heavy objects for the first week or two. As the days pass, swelling gradually subsides, and stitches are typically removed within the first week.
Most patients can return to work and normal daily activities within 10 to 14 days, although strenuous exercise and intense sun exposure should be avoided for several weeks. Full recovery and the final results of the facelift may take several months to become apparent, as residual swelling resolves and tissues settle into their new position. The worst of the swelling typically goes down within about two weeks, at which point most of our patients notice a visible, dramatic improvement that endures for many years.
