Sclerotherapy in Chicago and Arlington Heights, IL
The appearance of spider veins in arms, legs and thighs are often considered unsightly, preventing those self-conscious from wearing the outfits they want. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John A. Kotis provides relief at his Chicago and Arlington Heights, IL office.
What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are small, unsightly clusters of red or bluish veins that appear on the ankles, calves or thighs. Spider veins mainly affect women, and they can be particularly troublesome when they appear in the legs and ankles. While they rarely cause pain, highly visible or widespread spider veins can be detrimental to a person’s self-confidence, causing you to be embarrassed to show your legs.
As opposed to laser treatment, sclerotherapy removes spider veins through small injections. Dr. Kotis injects undesired veins with a saline solution. The solution, once injected into the veins, causes them to collapse. The veins dissipate from the surface of the skin and are reabsorbed into the body. Where laser treatment may offer results for finer veins, sclerotherapy can be used to treat larger areas.
One injection will treat about an inch of surface skin. A single procedure may involve numerous injections, depending on the size and area being treated. Generally, the treatment time is between 30 minutes to an hour. To achieve best results, two or more sessions are usually required.
Recovery from Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy requires some change to your daily routine for one to two days after treatment. While patients may return to work, they are advised to avoid strenuous activities. Support hose that are placed over the bandages must be worn as prescribed by Dr. Kotis in order to ensure proper healing. They can be worn under your clothes.
The Effects of Sclerotherapy
The results of sclerotherapy are often deemed remarkable by Dr. Kotis’s patients. You will see a dramatic difference immediately after the light bruising and swelling diminish, usually after a week or two following treatment.
The effects of sclerotherapy treatment are permanent for the specific veins treated. However, the treatment does not prevent the production of new spider vein sites, which can later be treated by Dr. Kotis with this same technique.
Am I a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John A. Kotis will review your medical history during your consultation to determine if sclerotherapy is right for you. Individuals with AIDS, hepatitis, blood-borne diseases, heart conditions, diabetes or circulatory issues may not qualify for sclerotherapy.
