Breast Implants in Chicago and Arlington Heights, IL

Are you unhappy with the current appearance of your breasts? Have you been considering breast implants, but aren’t sure who to trust? Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John A. Kotis has vast experience in the most modern techniques for breast implants and serves residents of Chicago, Arlington Heights, and the surrounding Illinois communities.

What is the Breast Implant Procedure?

If you are considering breast augmentation in Chicago, also called breast enlargement, the best option is breast implants. Choosing your breast implants is an important part of the procedure and can make a significant difference in getting the results you desire. The results you get depend heavily on the material filling the breast implant, the size of the breast implant and the shape of the breast implant.

This page will give you some good background information on breast implants, but the best way to learn which is the best breast implant for you is to schedule a consultation with Chicago board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John A. Kotis.

Silicone or Saline Breast Implants: What are the Pros and Cons?

Currently, there are only two fill materials for breast implants that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): silicone gel and saline solution. Silicone gel breast implants have the advantage of looking and feeling more like natural breast tissue. Saline breast implants can be inserted using a smaller incision (1.3 inches vs. 1.8 inches for silicone gel implants).

If a breast implant rupture occurs, the saline solution will be absorbed by the body, causing the breast to deflate. If a silicone gel implant ruptures, however, the implant is expected to maintain its shape and the fill material will remain in the breast and potentially within the implant itself.

Saline breast implants are approved for women age 18 or older. Silicone gel breast implants are approved for women age 22 or older.

Breast Implant Size: What to Consider

Breast implant size is an important decision that Dr. Kotis will help you make. He has a remarkable record of giving his Chicago-area patients great looking breast augmentation results with few complications, including no reported instances of capsular contracture. Part of how he accomplishes this is by ensuring that the breast implant size is appropriate to your own breast tissue. During your consultation, Dr. Kotis will listen to your cosmetic goals and recommend breast implants that are appropriate to both your current breasts and your cosmetic goals.

The Shape of Breast Implants

Breast implants come in two basic shapes: round or anatomical. The anatomical breast implants are designed to emulate the natural shape of the breast and are primarily designed for breast reconstruction. They have the disadvantage that they sometimes rotate in the pocket, causing a very unnatural appearance. For this reason, Dr. Kotis only uses round breast implants.

Round breast implants also vary in shape, as they come in different profiles. A higher profile implant is taller, allowing women with narrow chests to get dramatic results without getting an implant that will make their breasts look crowded on (or even off) their chests. During your consultation, Dr. Kotis will talk about how higher profile breast implants can help you get the results you desire.

Making the Decision to Get Breast Implants

During your consultation, Dr. Kotis will help you make the decision by showing you before and after images from previous patients. He will find patients similar to you in weight, height and skin type so you can see what results they achieved with a particular type of breast implant. This can help you make these important decisions with concrete information so you can select a procedure that will give you the results you desire.
