Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure.
There are countless ways to customize your breast implants. From shape, size, and material Dr. Kotis will guide you through tailoring your procedure and achieving the precise cosmetic outcome you desire.
Your breast augmentation in Chicago will be done under general anesthesia, which means you will be completely asleep and unable to feel any pain or discomfort.
During surgery, Dr. Kotis will create the incision discussed during your initial consultation and place your breast implants either above or below the pectoral muscle. After checking the implants for size, shape and position, he will carefully close the incisions to minimize any scarring.
The reality is that there is no such thing as a “perfect” breast implant – there’s just the perfect one for you, your body and your needs. That’s why it’s so important to approach your breast enhancement with an open mind – and with the right breast implants surgeon in your corner.
On this page, we’ve outlined the basics of what you need to know when selecting the shape, size and type of your breast implants. During your pre-operative appointments with Dr. Kotis, he will expand on this information as he helps you select the breast implant that is right for you.
Before a breast augmentation in Chicago, patients will choose a breast implant type and size. Each of the following implants provide different results for patients.
Placed either behind or in front of the muscle before being filled with a salt water solution. This method allows patients to have smaller incisions.

In the event of a rupture, the body will absorb the saline solution
Approved for women 18 years of age and older
Pre-filled implants. These implants may require slightly larger incisions, but offer patients a more natural shape and feel.
Look and feel like natural breast tissue
Require a 1.8-inch incision
Maintain their shape in the event of a rupture
Approved for women 22 years of age and older
We offer round and tear-dropped implants. When inserted, these implants create a specific contour to the breasts. In addition, implants can be textured. Patients can choose implants with a smooth outer surface or ones with a textured surface, depending on which surgical results they desire.
A type of shaped implant which is made of a strong cohesive gel that offers a tear-drop appearance which mimics the natural contour and feel of female breasts. As opposed to other options, a gummy bear implant keeps its place within the breast. Patients are typically able to avoid implant-replacement surgeries with a gummy bear implant because they keep their shape as you age.
There are two basic breast implant shapes – round and anatomical – and each option has its own set of pros and cons.
Here’s what you need to know:
Available in a variety of profiles
Can be customized for either maximum projection or a natural look
No risk of rotation, which is a risk with anatomical implants (tear shaped implants)
Designed to mimic the shape of a natural breast
Often used during reconstruction procedures
May rotate within the breast implant pocket
Choosing the correct size of breast implant is a critical part of your journey to more beautiful breasts. There are several ways to get a real-world concept of how your new breasts will look.
Here’s what you need to know:
All Chicago women who undergo breast enhancement do so because they want to increase the size of their breasts. However, this process is much more complicated than simply selecting a cup size.
If your breast implants are not appropriately sized, you will be at a heightened risk for capsular contracture, a serious complication of breast augmentation surgery. Additionally, it’s likely that you will be unsatisfied with the results if your implants are too large or too small for your figure.
This test is easy to perform. Simply get a pair of knee-high pantyhose and fill them with various quantities of dry rice or other grain. Breast implant sizes are in cubic centimeters (cc), and you can visualize how various sizes will appear on your body with these quantities of grain:
30cc = 1/8 cup rice
59cc = 1/4 cup rice
78cc = 1/3 cup rice
118cc = 1/2 cup rice
156cc = 2/3 cup rice
177cc = 3/4 cup rice
236cc = 1 cup rice
All Chicago women who undergo breast augmentation do so because they want to increase the size of their breasts. However, this process is much more complicated than simply selecting a cup size.
Every person has a different body type, and measurements of your chest and torso aid in determining the most appropriate breast implant size to look natural on your body. Your vision of what you want to achieve with a boob job is more easily communicated with visual images; bring photos if there is a certain breast size or look you want.
Dr. Kotis will show you photos of patients with a body shape similar to yours to aid you in selecting the right size of implant. Plastic surgeons don’t typically think in cup sizes, but in implant sizes, so images are used to assist in this process. Our advanced 3D animation system will allow you to visualize the procedure and what to expect.
Measurements of your chest and torso are an important part of choosing implant size and shape. A balance suiting body shape will look most natural. With many sizes, shapes, and degrees of projection in implants now available, you want to ensure you choose right. Measuring the chest and torso aids in this process. Dr. Kotis is very meticulous in this process, and precisely measures the chest and torso to assist you to choose implants in the proper proportion for your body.
After a patient determines their implant shape and type, they can work with Dr. Kotis to determine the placement of their incisions. Each type of incision allows Dr. Kotis access to the breast tissue. The varying incision types offer distinct benefits.
Is made around the areola or darkened area of the nipple. It is important to note that an incision of this type carries a higher risk. Patients may lose nipple sensitivity after a periareolar incision.
The most commonly used incision, an inframammary incision, is made below the breast. The incision is placed within the crease of the breast, so the scars are hidden. Unlike the periareolar incision, an inframammary incision rarely causes loss of nipple sensation.
A transaxillary incision is another option. Dr. Kotis makes the incision in the armpit. Because patients’ incisions are located under the arm, they may avoid noticeable scarring around the breast.
A transumbilical augmentation incision, or TUBA incision, is another conveniently-placed incision. Dr. Kotis makes this incision near the navel where he uses an endoscopic technique to place the breast implants. A thin tube, threaded through the incision, allows for remote placement. The scar from a TUBA incision is easily concealed.
Once your implants and incisions have been selected, Dr. Kotis will guide you through selecting the placement of your implants. The right choice for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your lifestyle and aesthetic goals.
This option involves placing the implant beneath the pectoral muscle. It’s a more invasive technique that requires an additional incision and results in a slightly more intensive recovery. However, implants that are placed in this way tend to look and feel very natural.
With this approach, the implant is placed closer to the skin’s surface, above the pectoral muscle. Compared to submuscular, it is a slightly easier surgery and results in a nicely lifted appearance. However, any rippling may be more noticeable and the final results aren’t as natural-looking.
After a breast augmentation procedure with Dr. Kotis, patients are driven home by their designated caregiver. Patients will be given aftercare instructions to help speed up recovery.
Most patients experience swelling for the first few weeks after their procedure. During that time, patients may take medication for any discomfort. Patients will also wear supportive garments and bandages until their breasts heal.
It’s normal to experience swelling, discomfort throughout the first few weeks. During this time, you will be instructed to:
Take your prescribed medication as directed to manage your discomfort

Walk lightly around the house to promote healing

The location and extent of scarring will depend on individual physiological factors, as well as the type of incision you’ve had. Most procedures leave little or no visible scarring. TUBA and underarm incisions have the least potential for visible scarring, because they are located away from the breast itself, in the case of TUBA, in the navel; and in the case of underarm incisions, in the armpit. These types of incisions do limit your other options for placement and type of implant, however. Current cosmetic surgery procedures, regardless of the type of incision, are designed to minimize visible scarring as much as possible.
This depends largely on individual factors including your healing abilities, age, whether you smoke or not, and your postsurgical care; as well as the type of incision, and location of the implant. In most cases, however, you should be able to participate in all of your normal activities within about four to six weeks, and the full healing process, including any final scarring, will be complete in 6 months to a year.
