The Asian facial structure has certain attributes, one of which is that the upper eyelids may not have a natural fold. This fold is often referred to as a “double eyelid.” To enhance facial appearance, many people with an Asian background choose to undergo minor surgery to create this fold.

Creating a Double Fold

To create a beautiful enhancement with a double fold requires artistry and an understanding of the unique structure of the eyelid. The perfect crease enhances your entire face with a very natural appearance that makes the most of your natural features. Dr. John A. Kotis is a recognized leader in facial plastic surgery, and often called upon to perform this delicate procedure.

To achieve the most beautiful results requires extensive experience working with patients who have an Asian background. Rather than “westernizing” the eyes, the procedure should serve to enhance the beauty of your natural features. To create a defined crease requires a surgery different from traditional eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

The Procedure:

Asian Eyelid Surgery

To create larger, brighter eyes with a beautiful natural-looking upper eyelid fold, a specialized surgery is required for those of Asian descent. The procedure includes the following steps:

  • A tiny incision (or several small incisions) is made in the correct area of the upper lid.

  • Skin, muscle, or excess fat may need to be removed in some people who have overhanging lids.

  • The skin is then sutured to the correct eyelid muscles to create the crease.

  • These sutures may be dissolvable or may need to be removed in about a week, based upon the custom treatment.

The surgery is very delicate and demands high level surgical skills to achieve the most attractive result. Dr. Kotis is both a leader in the plastic surgery field, and an educator. With a five-star rating, and listed as a “Top Doc,” you can be confident that your face and eyes are in the hands of a true medical professional.

Recovery from Asian Eyelid Surgery

After your surgery is complete, you will have prescription medication to take to manage discomfort, but this is only needed in the early stages. You may need medication to reduce swelling. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising after the procedure. While this will not impact your vision, the crease may appear higher than expected at this point.

As the swelling diminishes, the new fold will settle into position for a very natural look. You will have scheduled follow-up appointments to help ensure everything is healing. Most patients will be back to “life as normal” within a few weeks, with the majority of post-op swelling dissipated within a month, and full results (with incision scars blending into skin color) typically achieved within about six months to a year.
