Gynecomastia is Growing in Popularity Among Men in Chicago
It seems that men are trending towards enhancing the way they look. In addition to spending more time at the salon and the spa, men are seeking more and more cosmetic surgery. With the heavy emphasis placed on perfection the taboo of plastic surgery on men is in the past. More and more men want a sculpted athletic looking torso and those that have had issues with over grown male breasts are seeking to have those breast reduced. This procedure is known and gynecomastia and is growing in popularity in Chicago and all over the United States.
The Procedure
This cosmetic procedure aims at removal all the excess fat and glandular tissue so that the breast contour matches the male chest and looks more like a flat and firm. This can be accomplished by Liposuction or Tissue Excision.
Pre-Operative Considerations
As with all cosmetic surgery it is imperative that patients do their research with regard to the surgeon of choice. It is important to stress the importance of consulting with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with expertise in the procedure that you are considering. A surgeon’s skill in liposuction and breast reduction techniques is very important and should not be taken lightly. Dr. John A. Kotis is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that has completed approximately 250 male breast reductions and over 1,500 liposuction procedures.
Gynecomastia with Liposuction
Gynecomastia with Liposuction is usually recommended by Dr. John A. Kotis when the male patient does not have sagging and stretching of the skin but rather has firm breast that have excess fat and glandular tissue.
When Dr. John A. Kotis chooses Liposuction as the preferred technique to remove unwanted fat and glandular tissue he makes two incisions on each side of the chest. These incisions may be located by the armpit or on the edge of areola. This procedure may be done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. This is considered same day surgery thus the patient is able to return home the same day.
Gynecomastia with Tissue Excision
Gynecomastia with Tissue Excision is usually recommended by Dr. John A. Kotis when the male patient has a lot of sagging and stretched out skin in the breast area in addition to excess fat and glandular tissue. This sagging and stretched out skin requires excision of that skin.
When Dr. John A. Kotis chooses Gynecomastia with Tissue Excision as his preferred technique he usually places the incision within the natural creases of the chest or peri-areolar (on the edge of the areola). As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John A. Kotis places the incisions in such a way that the scars once the incisions heal are not visible to the eye.
This procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia as are most plastic surgery procedures. This is considered same day surgery thus the patient is able to return home the same day.
Post Operative Considerations
Both Gynecomastia with Liposuction and Gynecomastia with Excision are surgical procedures that need to be taken seriously. Patients will be sent home with a prescription for antibiotics which need to be taken. It is not unusual for patients to have swelling and soreness. Patients are usually ready to return to their daily routine after a week. Dr. Kotis does not recommend returning to any exercise regiment until the patient is seen at least a few weeks post operatively and given the go ahead by Dr. Kotis.
